Anna Paquin: Coming out for Give A Damn

Anna Paquin, the star we have all come to know and admire on True Blood, has raised a few eyebrows. Anna Paquin has publicly declared her sexuality, along with Clay Aiken and Cyndi Lauper. Anna Paquin made her announcement of bisexuality in the Give A Damn campaign against hate crimes. The Give A Damn organization arranged for several celebrities together to speak in this PSA. The organization provides same day loans to certain GLBT causes.

Anna Paquin comes out of the closet

At the beginning of a 30-second public service announcement, Anna Paquin very simply states “I’m bisexual”. Who Anna Paquin could be dating – if anybody – is still unknown.

The meaning of bisexual

What, exactly, does it mean when Anna Paquin says that she is bisexual? In general, bisexuality means that a person is attracted to both men and women. Some bisexual people are equally attracted to both genders, while others have a slight preference for one or the other. The Kinsey Scale and Klein Sexual Orientation Grid both put these differences on a numerical scale. The Kinsey scale rates sexuality on a 0 to 6 scale, with 0 being exclusively heterosexual and 6 being exclusively homosexual. If a person falls in the 3-5 range, they are usually considered bisexual.

Many celebrities join Anna Paquin

Anna Paquin is not the sole celebrity that speaks for the Give A Damn campaign. Wanda Sykes, Elton John, Whoopi Goldberg, Eric Roberts, Sharon Osbourne, Kelly Osbourne, Jason Mraz, Judith Light, Cynthia Nixon, Kim Kardashian, and Kevin Alejandro all speak out in the advertisement. While some of these celebrities are quite openly gay, lesbian or bisexual, others are not.

Taking on Don’t Ask Don’t Tell

First of all, the Give A Damn PSA speaks out against hate crime. It also calls to attention the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy, though not by name. The DADT policy discharges openly gay members of the military out of service, and is currently being reviewed. Many GLBT youth and members of the armed forces are forced to get cheap payday loans after their support systems have crumbed beneath them. The Give A Damn campaign aims to strengthen laws and provide assistance to fix problems like this.
