Danyl Johnson makes splash on ‘X Factor’

It’s getting hard for me to keep track of all of the shows in which people compete for a chance to become famous in the entertainment industry. There’s “America’s Got Talent” and all of the other country-specific incarnations of that show, and today, thanks to the Danyl Johnson video, I found out about this show called “X Factor.”
Because of the presence of Simon Cowell at the judges table in all of these shows, I can only tell them apart by YouTube label. However, I’m not the only one who discovered “X Factor” just because of the Danyl Johnson video. Could this be a time when the contestant makes the show famous instead of the other way around?

It certainly seems that might be the case. The Danyl Johnson video has gotten a whole lot of attention since Simon Cowell gave him a standing ovation and said it was the best first audition he’s ever seen. Ever.
He’s a regular guy who probably needs credit counseling because he teaches elementary school — aaaaaw! — and we all know how much money teachers (don’t) make. At least, he’s a regular guy until he starts to sing. He sang the Beatles’ “With a Little Help from My Friends,” but he most definintely made the song his own.
Reality rock stars
With all of these different shows picking the next “American Idol” or other such “it” person, it seems eventually the entertainment industry wouldn’t be able to handle the load of new stars, but it seems to be handling the load quite well. Perhaps that is because in many cases, after the winning contestant is crowned, they don’t actually end up doing much.
Danyl Johnson is being compared to Susan Boyle, which is only an accurate comparison if you’re talking about stunning voices and very popular YouTube videos. The similarities end there. The Susan Boyle phenomenon was always very much focused on and driven by her appearance, which was not typical for the entertainment industry, and neither was her personality.
However, Danyl Johnson is a 27-year-old hottie with tons of personality and amazing stage presence. See for yourself.

Simon the stranger
Danyl Johnson does give an amazing performance in the videos. He has a great voice, and all of his jumping around on stage helps make the performance more fun and interesting to watch.
I wonder, though, if part of this Danyl Johnson video phenomenon is cause by hearing Simon Cowell give out the most unabashedly ecstatic praise anyone has ever heard from him. Ususally, when Simon gives praise there’s a “but” in there somewhere or at least he comes across as somewhat reserved compared to the other delighted judges after a particularly good performance. Not this time. I think Simon might be in love.
